£1 HIKE ON BOTTLE OF WHISKY

SCOTCH whisky prices are set to rise by at least a £1 a bottle as distillers struggle to cope with rising demand for the drink in China.

The move follows the increasing popularity of whisky among the Chinese… who drink it mixed with green tea.

Demand has almost doubled in recent years, up 84 per cent from 2004 to £46million, causing supply problems in the UK.

In Scotland, distillers buy whisky from each other to make up their blended whiskies, which can contain up to 30 different malts.

The shortage has led to fears that some companies will be forced to put up their prices by at least 10 per cent.

A spokesman for Angus Dundee Distillers said: „There isn’t much whisky available to buy any more, and what there is now sells at a much higher price. Supply and demand means we have to increase our prices.“
